A team of experts have been following the numbers of children diagnosed with autism in their state New Jersey for many years and have published several studies. With their latest study they now conclude THAT THE INCREASE IN AUTISM PREVALENCE IS REAL AND NOT ACCOUNTED FOR BY BETTER AWARENESS OR BY CHANGING DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA.
“The vast majority of identified autism cases were children who met the criteria for Autistic Disorder, the most severe and emblematic form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, contradicting the idea that increases in prevalence might be a function of better awareness or diagnostic substitution.”
The experts conclude that:
=== Autism is prevalent and severe. At 2.5% prevalence, autism is the most common severe childhood disorder and one that exacts a severe and usually life-long burden.
=== Autism prevalence has increased significantly in the preceding decade and its rise has affected all groups. The magnitude and breadth of increase observed over a sustained period contradicts the idea that better awareness is driving the phenomenon.
=== New Jersey is the leading indicator of autism prevalence in the United States and a plateau in rate has not been observed.
